  • Be a Better Painter with Ben Manchipp, Part 1 of 2
    0 out of 5

    “Part 1 of 2
The aim of these videos is to make you a better painter. In this first part, Ben Manchipp looks at some of the core skills needed to improve the overall look of your painting. Starting with planned washes with defined areas, then to more challenging projects, and finishing with a beautiful painting of a Sussex windmill, Ben explains many of the methods you should use to make each painting you do better than the last. The aim of this workshop is to help you be a better painter.
If you have been painting for some time and feel that you want to improve your painting, it is often necessary to stand back and review how you work and the level of your abilities. You may also need to consider what your aims are and plan what you may need to do in order to improve.
The demonstrations take you step by step through each project, developing ideas and methods from concept to the finished study.
The workshop introduces what Ben Manchip considers are the core skills. These are the foundations that every painter needs in order to improve and develop. Core skills are good drawing and a working knowledge of methods and materials. These skills enable the painter to develop a creative process in the pursuit of more original work.
Good drawing is the most important core skill. It is the core of all your development, both during the process of developing new ideas and directions and in producing finished paintings. The understanding of methods and materials is also important if you wish to develop your work. The ability to paint simple things well, under control, and with understanding of the process will enable you to develop the ability to paint more complex subjects better.
The first exercise demonstrates the core skills of planned tones and washes, a basic principle of watercolour, and the importance of using ‘white space’. The simple opening exercises continue progressively across a range of subjects, and conclude with a more complex painting using all the methods and materials that are demonstrated throughout the filming.
Learning to draw and paint well is a little like learning music. Start with simple scales and exercises and become an expert at these first, before trying to improvise. The classic disciplines of drawing, composition and technical skills create the freedom to explore and be creative. These are the core skills that will enable you to ‘Be a Better Painter’.

  • Being Bold with Watercolour with Annette Kane
    0 out of 5

“Watercolorist Annette Kane shows you how to be brave, be creative and be BOLD!
“”Bold”” isn’t a word generally associated with watercolour, but that’s because most artists don’t know the secrets of using them to create bright, vibrant works.
Confidence plays a large part in being able to paint well in watercolour and feeling able to take a risk or two without feeling too concerned about the results – mistakes are, after all, a part of the learning process.
In this simply stunning video, Annette Kane paints two very different scenes using very different styles and techniques. Firstly Annette Kane works in a way that she describes as “”detailed and careful”” when she paints a stunning garden scene, full to the brim with plant life, shrubbery and potted flowers. Her second project involves a much more relaxed and looser approach when she paints a Mediterranean coastal scene, capturing the “”idea”” of the landscape instead of recording the precise detail.
Overall, Annette Kane encourages you to try something new and a little bit different, allowing you to improve along the way and grow as an artist. You can have some great successes, just by being a little freer and trying different things – above all and more important than any technique is to simply have fun!
Take the ideas, use the techniques and have a go yourself!

The natural world is a source of constant inspiration and amazement for many artists. Learning to paint natural representations of each of the four seasons can be quite a challenge for beginning and intermediate students, which is why this oil painting workshop with Tim Deibler is a must-watch for all landscape painters.
Many artists find it difficult to know exactly where to start an oil painting, especially when working from a photo reference or painting in plein air. Deibler starts this workshop with a discussion of four different approaches to start the painting, and demonstrates how to create focal points in a loose, spontaneous style.
Through Deibler’s step-by-step approach, you’ll learn a straightforward method for creating a scene by using simple, geometric shapes. Deibler will also teach you how to build paint layers to create definition and shape elements so that your paintings will produce great effects with minimum effort.
The oil painting workshop continues with an essential introduction to the four key elements of painting: shapes, values, color and edges. Students will learn the importance of capturing seasonal changes and the effect of light and reflection on the land. You’ll also learn how to pick out simple geometric shapes in the landscape for easier composition of your paintings.
During the course of this easy to remember instructional video, you’ll be inspired to get out and experience nature and paint what you see, no matter what season it is.
